Norwood Slow Zone Party

Last Saturday, the Friends of the Williamsbridge Oval hosted a party to celebrate the Norwood Slow Zone.

FOTWO has long been concerned about pedestrian safety in our community, especially around the park, and we wanted to thank everyone who helped bring improvements to our neighborhood. Norwood was among the first neighborhoods selected in the city for a Slow Zone. We thank all the following:

  • Assemblymembers Jeffrey Dinowitz and Mark Gjonaj, who submitted the application for the Slow Zone
  • The 52nd Precinct Community Council, Bronx Community Board 7, the Mosholu Preservation Corporation, Montefiore, and former Councilmember Koppell, who submitted letters of support, along with FOTWO
  • The New York City Department of Transportation for supporting Norwood's application and performing all the work to turn it into a reality
  • The 52nd Precinct, which is doing the ongoing work to educate drivers and take enforcement action against unsafe driving

We call out Daniel Johnson for special recognition. Daniel worked hard for our community when he was on Assemblymember Dinowitz's staff, and his efforts to pull together the successful Slow Zone application was just one example. We are glad that he will continue to work with our community now that he is on staff with our new Councilmember, Andrew Cohen.

It is also worth noting that both Elisabeth von Uhl and Dilletta Pina (both with FOTWO) spent considerable time on separate efforts to gather many of the petition signatures in support of the Slow Zone.

Friends of the Williamsbridge Oval has been awarded a $1,500 grant from the New Yankee Stadium Community Benefit Fund to start a new tree care program at the Oval. Two members of FOTWO will become certified tree pruners. We will also be able to purchase tree care equipment and then facilitate volunteer events to take care of the trees, as well as educating others on proper tree care.
